A “jaguar cat” was rescued by the Environmental Police (BPMA) in the backyard of a house, in the early hours of this Monday (28), in Missão Velha (CE). The animal was spotted on a farm by residents, who called agents for help.
Early in the morning, the Ceará Military Police (PMCE) were called to respond to an incident at a farm in the interior of Ceará. In the rural area of the municipality of Missão Velha, a “jaguar cat” – also known as the maracajá cat or “bush cat” – invaded the backyard of a house, where three children lived, who spotted the animal among the trees.
With support from the Environmental Police (BPMA), the Environmental Police (BPMA) animal was rescued by agents and transported to the NGO BiodiverSe, a partner of PMCE, where it will undergo a screening period, and will then be returned to the wild. Watch the rescue video .
Animal is not domestic
The margay cat (Leopardus wiedii) is a small feline with several unique characteristics. The animal can reach 97 cm in length and weigh up to 4.9 kg.
The animal’s appearance resembles a cat, with a protruding snout, large, protruding eyes, and a long tail and legs. The fur is brown, with dark brown or black rosettes and longitudinal streaks, reminiscent of the appearance of jaguars.
The BPMA warns of the need to maintain a safe distance from the animal, which although it appears to be a “different” version of domestic cats, is in fact not a domesticable animal, as it ultimately exhibits aggressive behavior.
