Since last year, analysts have been talking about a crisis in the semiconductor industry. Automakers were among the first to experience the shortage of microcircuits. It is assumed that work at the enterprises of the British auto giant will resume in a week, but everything will depend directly on the supply of semiconductors.
The production suspension has affected the Jaguar XE, XF and F-Type, which are being assembled at Castle Bromwich, and the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque, which are being built on the Halewood lines. The Solihull plant, which produces Range Rovers and Jaguar F-Paces, is still operating as before, as are Jaguar Land Rover’s facilities in Slovakia, Brazil and China.
“Like other car manufacturers, we are currently facing supply chain challenges related to COVID-19, including a global semiconductor shortage that is affecting our capabilities and production schedules. As a result, we have adjusted the release schedules for some models, which means our manufacturing facilities in Castle Bromwich and Halewood will resume operations after a limited downtime from Monday 26 April. We work closely with suppliers to solve the problem and minimize the impact on customers as much as possible, ”said a brand spokesman.
But Jaguar Land Rover isn’t the only brand in the automotive market to suffer from a semiconductor shortage. Many automakers are now urgently rethinking their supply chains and considering workarounds to ensure continuous production. However, analysts at IHS Markit estimate that the semiconductor shortage will cut car production this year by nearly 700,000 units.
