Jaider Esbell, featured indigenous plastic artist at the Bienal de São Paulo, dies

The indigenous artist Jaider Esbell died this Tuesday (2) at 41 years old. Born in Roraima, he was one of the exhibitors at the 34th Bienal de São Paulo, which has been taking place since September in the city of São Paulo. The cause of death has not yet been informed.

In a statement, the São Paulo Biennial Foundation lamented the passing of Jaider and highlighted the artist’s contributions to the Brazilian scene. “Esbell played a central role in the movement to consolidate contemporary indigenous art in Brazil. With clarity and generosity, he became one of the main spokespersons for artists from native peoples”.

On the lake in Ibirapuera Park, Jaider created an installation of two snakes, with vibrant colors and an internal illusion. The snakes, measuring approximately 20 meters each, represent “a power animal” in the culture of indigenous shamanism.

“His contribution went far beyond the presentation of his own works, involving intense exchanges with curators and other artists in the exhibition, a historical curatorial role in the collective exhibition and the development of actions in collaboration with other artists”, says the press release. The Government of Roraima also issued a statement on the arista’s death. “He leaves a legacy of struggle for the cultural and artistic values ​​of indigenous peoples,” writes Governor Antonio Denarium (PP).

Indigenous leaders and activists spoke about Jaider’s passing and highlighted his artistic talent. “It’s very difficult for us, the pain that remains, the loss of our young and great activist, I’m very sorry and I wish your people and family strength”, wrote Alice Pataxó, activist of the native peoples.
