Jamie Dornan for Belfast: “Lucky Irish pubs exist”

Belfastfilm directed by Kennet Branagh with Jamie Dornan And Caitríona Balfe alongside Judy Dench, it is inspired by the director’s life and focuses on nostalgia, and the estrangement that comes from losing a point of reference such as one’s home. So the director told us during the interview: «La nostalgia from the own Earth I think it is a not completely internalized problem for me. It is a reasoning that I understood by carrying out Belfast. At the beginning of the film, when I was nine, that was the last time I really knew who I was. And even if I had found other narratives through cinema, other worlds to play in, other voices and masks to wear, returning to what was home for me was really fundamental in the making of this film ».

A message of hope and encouragement for Branagh: “This is a message for all those who feel lost. There are memories within each of us, of our family if you were lucky enough to have a loving one. Those memories will always be with you and therefore “Home” can be wherever you are. Sometimes it takes a while to remember, it took me 50 years and this film to recalibrate this aspect of my life“.

There are several ways to defeat nostalgia, as it suggests Jamie Dornan: «I’m lucky because of homesickness. There are many Irish people like me in Los Angeles, and there are Irish pubs too, here and all over the world, and it’s fun to find out how many times you find yourself going to pubs, even when you’re traveling the world. I once also went there with a colleague, whose name I won’t mention, but we were both away on business. We met and we said: “We will not go to a pub” and instead in the end we ended up in one of the most classic Irish-style pubs, sipping beer, a pint of Guinness to be precise. It reassures you to know that you have other Irish people around the world“.

Mothers and fathers who struggle for everyday life, this is the aspect that has struck the most Caitríona Balfe: “For me it was nice to play a mother who has to fight for everyday life, for everyday life during a difficult time, of turbulent social and political changes, and this made me think a lot about my parents’ work, in raising us and protect us. My mom practically worked from home, she raised seven children, and playing this role I understood even more the effort and commitment of being a mother. Respect, really, and even more complete admiration for her. ”
