Jamie Lee Curtis used her social media to pay tribute to comedian and actor Richard Lewis, who died this week. The two acted together on the ABC sitcom “Anything But Love”.
Lewis died last Tuesday (27), at his home in Los Angeles. Known even more for “Curb Your Enthusiasm” (“Segura a Onda”, according to the title in Portuguese), he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
On her Instagram profile, Curtis shared a series of photos of her with Lewis in three posts. In the subtitles, she talked about the work the two did together on “Anything But Love”, which ran between 1989 and 1992.
“I just read that my friend Richard Lewis has died. I remember exactly where I was when I saw an ad for his stand-up show on Sunset Boulevard, where we were auditioning for the 'Anything But Love' pilot,” Curtis began. “I asked the director of cast to take him to the audition to play my best friend/maybe boyfriend, Marty Gold.”
“I thought he was very handsome. He made me laugh, which is something a strong, capable woman can't do alone. He got the part as soon as he made me laugh by mispronouncing 'Bundt cake'.”
She continued: “He impressed everyone. It was a love triangle sitcom and they didn't pick that pilot, but they came to me and said that my chemistry with Richard was so good that we should renew the original pilot – and that's the show that ended up becoming it.”
Curtis explained that Lewis hated working with an audience, even though he was a brilliant stand-up comedian. “He was also a stand-up comedian and hated working with an audience – while I, who had never done a play, loved it,” he wrote.
“He used to hide his lines everywhere on the set, in props, door frames, in my face while the camera focused on him and he always carried a clipboard with the script. Turns out he was a wonderful actor. Deep and tremendously funny,” he continued.
The actress also said that the two supported each other during the death of their friend Richard Frank, as well as John Ritter, who also participated in the sitcom.
“The last message I received from Richard was for me to convince ABC and Disney to make another DVD box set of episodes of the series,” she said.
“He’s also the reason I’m sober,” she added. “He helped me. I am eternally grateful to him for this act. He found love with Joyce, and of course, besides his sobriety, that was what mattered most to him. I'm crying as I write this. It's a strange way to say thank you to a kind and funny man. Rest in laughter, Richard. My Marty, I love you. Signed Hannah!”
Still in the posts, Curtis praised Lewis' performance in “Curb Your Enthusiasm”.
