All about my mother, but à la parisienne. That is, what it means to be the daughter of one of the greatest icons of cinema and fashion of all time, so much so that in 1984 it inspired Jean-Louis Dumas, then president of Hermès, to create a legendary bag in honor of her (and that bears its name). To tell her mother about her, Jane Birkin, is Charlotte Gainsbourg in the docu-film, in cinemas from 16 June, Jane by Charlotte, presented in 2021 out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
For the first time behind the camera, the multitasking diva (also actress and singer), daughter of Serge Gainsbourg, draws an intimate and personal portrait of the deep relationship that binds her to her iconic parent.
Goddess of the Swinging London, synonymous with style and symbol of the 60s and 70sthe super diva is outlined and shown to the public in all her timeless charm by the one who was her first student and who, revealing it to the public, rediscovers it again.
Seventy-six years old Jane, on the threshold of 51 Charlotte, both muses from two different generations united by an unusual destiny: a fashion icon DNA.
Born in London but naturalized French, Birkin it has never lost its characteristic accent, thus becoming the real one a timeless bridge between the style of his England and French elegance. Quintessence of being effortlessly cool, it still captivates today: impossible to resist.
So much so that at 70 she was again the face of a fashion campaign, wanted by Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent. The secret of her success? Probably to be found in the contrast that she embodies: complex personality but queen of nonchalance, disruptive and endowed with unique grace. So she imposed herself from the end of the Sixties becoming her in Paris, where she had moved, the it-girl to copy for all the girls of the time, and of those to follow. His favorite combo, now as then, flared jeans and white T-shirt / shirt, is the one that conquers everyone forever.
And so she spent the decades wearing velvet blazers, low crochet dresses held by a ball pin, sexy see-through outfits and shoes all the time (almost never heels). Fil rouge, the wicker basket always with you, a distinctive sign. At least until the advent of her Birkin bag made for her needs as a new mother complete with a special space dedicated to the bottle.
Charlotte Gainsbourg she has succeeded, for her part, in the difficult undertaking of not getting lost and disappearing behind that sacred monster of her mother. We do chapeau. Style icon like Jane, similar to her parent but different. The DNA confirms that fashion legend you are born, sure, but Charlotte has her own unique style.
Talis mater, talis filia, therefore, up to a certain point. Edgy, glamorous and subtly counter-current beauty. On the red carpet she appears gritty, almost always in black, rock and charming, very often branded Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton or Balenciaga. Like her mother, she has an innate class achieved effortlessly that allows her to wear a red carpet designer garment with the same ease of jeans and a basic T-shirt.
The things that Jane and Charlotte have in common are perhaps not 4,850, as Daniele Silvestri sings, but certainly both start from same basis of à la page attitude. One naively sexy, androgynous and splendidly imperfect the other, with her unkempt hair in the wind, when they are together they appear in often coordinated minimalist mood outfits, but never photocopies of each other. A question of feeling, after all, for which each one enriches the look, even if similar, with the Birkin factor or the Gainsbourg one.
Changing the fashion addenda, however, does not change the result: tailoring lessons to power by two style icons who conquer from Gen Z to overs of every era.
