The man suspected of killing former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is 41-year-old unemployed Tetsuya Yamagami, who told investigators he used a homemade weapon, Japanese police said.
“This is what the suspect is claiming and we found that (the weapon used) clearly appears to be improvised, but our analysis is still ongoing,” a police officer in Nara district, where the killing took place, told reporters.
Nara police are unable to say whether the organization the suspect says he targeted exists today. It will investigate whether Abe was connected to “specific organization” mentioned by the suspect, while also investigating why Abe was targeted, among other possible targets linked to “specific organization”.
It remains unclear to police if the bullets were also homemade. Police collected several metal fragments from the scene of the murder, and cannot say whether they came from bullets.
The material of the improvised weapon is a mixture of materials such as metal and wood, he stated. However, police cannot say whether the improvised weapon was a 3D printed weapon. Police are investigating whether the suspect acted alone.
Police also cannot reveal whether the security system might be tighter for a former prime minister than for other MPs.
The suspect said he had served in the Japan Self-Defense Force Navy for three years and that his anger at Abe had nothing to do with politics.
