Japanese authorities warned today that covid-19 appears to be spreading rapidly in the country and asked citizens to be extra vigilant ahead of the holiday weekend and summer school holidays.
Japan has recently seen a rapid rise in cases, at levels that correspond to the peak of the previous wave at the beginning of the year. 16,878 cases were detected in Tokyo on Wednesday, the highest number since February, while the total number in the country exceeded 90,000.
“Yesterday there were 94,466 cases recorded nationwide and with the number of new patients increasing by 2.14 times compared to the previous week, we are witnessing a rapid spread” of covid-19, said Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno.
However, he added that the number of hospitalizations remains low, as do those of serious infections and deaths.
“The number of new cases is increasing in every prefecture in Japan and appears to be spreading rapidly,” said Japanese Health Minister Shigeyuki Goto.
Tokyo is set to raise its covid-19 alert to the highest level, the Fuji News Network reported.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is scheduled to hold a press conference today at 18:00 (Japan time, 12:00 Greek time) in which he will also address the coronavirus epidemic.
