Japan: Biden kicks off visit with Emperor Naruhito

LAST UPDATE: 08.15

US President Joe Biden, who is in Japan to launch a regional economic plan to tackle China and reaffirm ties with a key US ally in Asia, began his visit Monday with meeting with Emperor Naruhito.

President Biden also assured his “good friend” Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida today that the United States is fully committed to Japan’s defense in the wake of escalating tensions with China, as well as the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The cornerstone of the US president’s two-day visit, during which he will meet in addition to the leaders of Japan, the leaders of India and Australia, who together with the US constitute the “Quartet” contact group for the region (Quad), will is the presentation later today of an Economic Framework for the Region of India and the Pacific.

This is a broad plan to build an economic pillar on the effective involvement of these countries in Asia.

Biden arrived at the palace, where he met with Naruhito exchanging greetings before entering, while wearing masks.

Talks between the two countries discuss Japan’s plans to strengthen its defense capabilities in response to China’s growing military might.

The two important allies are also expected to reaffirm their close ties under the Russian invasion of Ukraine, agreeing that unilateral changes to the existing framework of relations between the states through the use of military force are unacceptable.

Concerns are growing in Asia over China’s escalating aggression, with an emphasis on the narrow context of its ties with Russia. In particular, tensions are escalating around Taiwan, which Beijing considers its province.

The agenda of the talks includes North Korea and regional issues, with President Biden later scheduled to meet with Japanese families who were abducted years ago and transported by train to North Korea.
