Japan-China rhetorical rhetoric about Ukraine and cooperation with the USA

Japan’s foreign minister today called on Beijing to “play a responsible role” in the Russian-Ukrainian crisis during its first conversation with its Chinese counterpart in six months, with the latter urging Tokyo not to cooperate with the US against the country. of.

Japan has adopted tough Western sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, while Beijing has refused to condemn it.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi told his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi that the Russian invasion was a “clear violation of the UN Charter and other international rules,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Hayashi “called on China to play a responsible role in maintaining international peace and security,” the statement added.

For his part, Wang commented that Japan’s cooperation with the United States should not “provoke controversy between the parties.”

The Chinese minister pointed out that there are many discussions about the “cooperation” of the USA and Japan “against China”, which create an “unpleasant atmosphere”, according to the announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The talks were the first between the two ministers since November, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry, and took place amid growing concerns in the face of international geopolitical tensions. China and Russia are seen as strengthening their cooperation.

In addition, US President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit Japan at the end of the week, after South Korea. There he will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and attend a Quad summit attended by Australia and India as well as Japan and the United States.

The aim of this alliance is to put pressure on China, which is considered to be strengthening its presence in the region.

Tokyo is worried about Beijing’s growing military presence in the Pacific, but at the same time China remains Japan’s main trading partner.
