Japanese authorities fear that at least two people have died today after landslides caused by torrential rains, which hit the city of Atami, in the center of the country, where about 20 people remain missing, broadcast the state television network NHK.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, who convened a special emergency management team to deal with the crisis, urged residents of the affected areas to remain vigilant.
“There may be new heavy rains and we need to be extremely careful,” Suga said during a televised address.
Two people were found having suffered a heart attack in Atami, 90 kilometers southwest of Tokyo and were taken to hospital, the NHK reported.
