Japan announced today that it will impose further sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, freezing any resources in the Japanese jurisdiction of 398 individuals and 28 organizations.
The decision was approved by the cabinet. It includes the imposition of measures against two daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the wife of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, according to the Japanese news agency Kyodo.
All new investments in Russia and the import of certain types of wood and machinery from April 19 have also been banned, while the funds of the Russian banks Alfabank and Sberbank will be frozen in the Japanese jurisdiction from May 12.
On Friday, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced that Japan would reduce and progressively end coal imports from Russia and impose further sanctions, in coordination with its G7 partners.
Mr Kishida spoke of the horrors of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine, which he described as “war crimes” for the first time.
