Japan has built vending machines that will give out free food in the event of an earthquake

In the coastal town Listenin Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, settled vending machines where they will be unlocked in case of earthquakes and other natural disastersdistributing free food and suppliesaccording to local media.

THE Japan installed two such vending machines in the city at the end of March to test their operation. The machines normally sell snacks and drinks for a fee, but they can distribute the items for free when a major earthquake or typhoon hits the city.

Apart from containing approx 300 bottles of soda and 150 emergency foodthe machines also contain emergency items such as personal hygiene items and masks, as stated in insider.com.

In case it is issued evacuation orderdue to a warning level of 5 or higher on Japan’s Shindo Seismic Scale, or conditions such as heavy rainfall, the machines will unlock.

Japan is one of them most seismically active countries in the world. Most recently, on May 26, an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on the Richter scale east of Tokyo, according to Reuters.

The vending machines are common in Japan and they appear on almost every street selling a wide range of items – some as unusual as bear or whale meat.
