Japan: Implementation of the restriction on entry of foreign nationals is extended

Japan will extend a ban on foreign nationals entering the country after the end of the year to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant, the Yomiuri newspaper reported today, citing anonymous government sources.

Tokyo decided to reverse the easing of screening late last month as cases of the Omicron variant spread around the world.

Japan is pursuing one of the toughest restrictive border control policies in the world.

Although the number of cases of COVID-19 infection has dropped dramatically since the outbreak of the deadly wave in August, there is growing concern about the Omicron variant following more than 30 cases have been identified in Japan.

Most of these cases were detected during inspections at airports, but also in quarantine infrastructure.
