The Prime Ministers of Japan and India, Fumio Kishida and Narendra Modi, after their meeting in New Delhi, agreed that changing the status quo by force is a reprehensible act, in a first Indian spike against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Japanese prime minister stressed to his Indian counterpart that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “undermines the foundations of the international order” and needs clear condemnation.
India and Japan are part of the Quadripartite Dialogue on Security (Quad), which also includes the United States and Australia.
While Japan has imposed sanctions on dozens of Russian citizens and organizations and has accepted Ukrainian refugees, India has not openly condemned Moscow.
“We reaffirm that any unilateral change in the status quo by force can not be forgiven in any part of the world and that it is necessary to seek peaceful solutions to transnational disputes under international law,” he said. .
