Japan reserves the right to take action against Russia, including imposing economic sanctions, in the event that Moscow invades Ukraine, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said today.
“The first and foremost thing is that Japan is vigorously seeking a solution through diplomatic dialogue,” he told a news conference.
“But if there is a Russian invasion, Japan will take appropriate action, including possible sanctions, in response to what will happen, in coordination with the G7 and the international community,” he said.
Russia has mobilized more than 100,000 troops along Ukraine’s border, a sign that Kiev and its Western allies are preparing to launch an invasion. The Kremlin insists it has no plans to go to war and accuses the West of being hysterical.
