Japan: Leaves Russia’s participation in the G20 unoccupied

THE Japan will take part in the meeting of G20 finance ministers next week, the Japanese minister said Sunichi Suzuki today, at a time when Western countries are calling for the expulsion of Russia from the International Economic Organization and have stated that they will abstain from the meetings in which Moscow is represented.

“The Japanese government is not in a position to comment on the participation of any country”said Suzuki during a press conference, when asked about Russia’s intention to participate in the summit digitally, announced by its president Indonesia Joko Widondo yesterday Thursday.

Last week, the US Treasury Secretary Janet Glenn said Washington would boycott G20 operations if Russian officials were involved. The German Minister of Finance Christian Lindner for his part he called for no form of co-operation with Moscow in the G20.

Mr. Suzuki noted that the forthcoming meeting of the finance ministers of the group of the twenty most developed economies of the world “is very important” as issues such as “Rising food and energy prices due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine”adding that they are expected to be present “The Minister of Finance and the President of the Central Bank of each country”.

Japan “Will take appropriate measures in close coordination with its G7 allies and (G20) host Indonesia”in order to implement the position adopted by the G7 leaders in March, that is, that the international institutions can not follow the footsteps in relations with Russia, added Mr. Suzuki.
