Japan: Nearly 60% of Tokyo supporters vote to cancel Tokyo Olympics

59% of Japanese estimate that the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo should be canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, according to a new poll conducted by the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper and was published today, reports APE.

The poll was conducted from May 7th to May 9th amid rising cases in the country.

The state of emergency will remain in place in the prefectures of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo until May 31 and has been imposed in Aichi and Fukuoka.

Average, 64% of respondents in the six prefectures voted in favor of canceling the Games. In other 41 prefectures the average was 57%.

Among those who want the sporting event to take place, 23% believe that the Games should be held without spectators, while 16% are in favor of reducing the number of spectators.

The Tokyo Summer Olympics, originally scheduled for 2020, have been postponed for a year due to the pandemic.

The Games are set to take place this summer, from 23 July to 8 August.

In fact, they are expected to include the largest number of sports (33) and categories (339).
