Rescuers started in the early hours of today morning in the middle of rain to search for people who are missing after the landslides that caused torrential rains in the coastal city of Atami in its central Japan.
An official told AFP that “The death toll remained unchanged at two”.
“Ten people have been rescued, but about 20 others are still missing,” he said.
“We resumed rescue operations early in the morning with about 1,000 rescuers, including 140 soldiers. “We are doing our best to locate survivors as quickly as possible, conducting operations very carefully as rainfall continues.”
Rescuers climbed to broken roofs yesterday and searched for survivors in cars that had crashed into half-sunken buildings in the resort town 90 km southwest of Tokyo, known for its thermal springs.
