Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said Saturday that the country had confirmed its “unwavering support” for Ukraine over its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Hayashi also reaffirmed that Japan will supply liquefied natural gas to Europe in case a Russian invasion leads to gas shortages across the region.
Russia supplies around 40% of the European Union (EU) gas. The potential impact on that offer if Russia invades Ukraine has led the EU to increase its demand for offers from other countries.
Hayashi attended a joint press conference in Hawaii with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and South Korean Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong. They share views that tensions are “scaling” in Ukraine and that they have agreed to “coordinate closely”.
Also on Saturday, US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone.
Biden warned Putin that the US and its allies would respond “decisively and impose swift and severe consequences” on Russia if Putin decides to invade Ukraine.
