Japan: Seventeen dead in ten days due to heavy snowfall

A total of 17 people have lost their lives so far in Japan within ten days due to the heavy snowfall affecting much of the country, according to the government agency’s provisional tally.

Snow has fallen in abundance over the past few days on the island of Honshualong the Sea of ​​Japan, as well as on the large northern island of Hokkaido.

Public broadcaster NHK spoke of fatal accidents involving elderly people who had gone out to clear snow around their residence or on the roof of their house.

In Hokkaido, tens of thousands of households faced power outages in the last few daysbut the network is now almost fully restored.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has advised residents of the affected areas not to take to the roads in their vehicles because they risk being stranded.

The intensity of the snowfall is expected to decrease from today, according to the JMA.
