Japan: Ten killed in tourist shipwreck – Another 16 missing

The ten people who have been identified so far after the sinking of a tourist ship in northern Japan on Saturday are still dead, while another 16 are still missing, the country’s port announced.

“We confirm the deaths of all ten people,” said a spokesman for the Japanese Coast Guard, adding that the search for the missing was ongoing.

The ship Kazu I set sail yesterday morning with 24 passengers, including two children, and a two-member crew for a tour along part of the Siretoko Peninsula, a protected natural area in the northeastern part of the northern island of Hokkaido, despite bad weather forecast in the area.

The crew sent an alarm signal at 13:13 local time (07:13 Greek time), warning that the ship was flooding and had begun to sink, as it had tilted 30 degrees.

The port arrived in the area after three hours of intensive searches, which have continued since then and in which the police, the army and the fishermen of the area are involved, while air means have also been developed.
