Japan: The ruling coalition is headed for victory in the July 10 upper house election

Japan’s ruling coalition is headed for a victory in the July 10 upper house election, with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s ruling party likely to increase its number of seats, according to the results of a poll published today.

A total of 125 seats are contested, with the simple majority being established by controlling 63 seats.

Kishida’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is expected to win about 60 seats, compared to the 55 seats it currently controls, according to a poll by business daily “Nikkei.” The poll was conducted over the weekend.

The reported poll’s result contrasts with recent polls showing a decline in support for the government due to rising prices, including high fuel prices, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
