Private company ispace has signed a contract for the delivery of a miniature “all-terrain” robot-transformer of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to the moon.
There are still few details about the robot. It is still under development: specialists from Sony, TOMY and Doshish University are working on this.
Judging by the images and press release from JAXA, this is a sphere with a diameter of ~ 80 mm and a weight of only 250 grams, which will transform and use torque to move along the lunar surface on two wheels. The device will take pictures and collect data on lunar dust.
The Japanese practiced the technology of “jumping” vehicles in low gravity conditions on the asteroid Ryugu in 2018 with robots HIBOU and OWL.

The collected telemetry of the mission will help JAXA’s plans to deploy a large pressurized rover for astronauts, which is being prepared to fly to the moon by 2029.
