Japan is considering imposing economic sanctions on Belarus, following in the footsteps of the United States, in backing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, two government officials familiar with the matter told Reuters today.
It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. The Japanese Foreign Ministry declined to comment.
According to the two officials, Tokyo is coordinating its actions with the other members of the G7.
The US sanctions on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine include 24 Belarusian officials and entities, according to the US Treasury Department.
Japan has already announced sanctions against Russia following the attack on Ukraine, with Prime Minister Kishinda calling Moscow’s actions “an unacceptable violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and international law.”
Russian military forces have continued their advance on Kiev in recent hours, despite the fact that Russia and Ukraine have left an “open window” in negotiations.
