Japan: Underground ice wall around Fukushima nuclear plant may have partially melted

The ice wall built underground around Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) ‘s damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant may have partially melted, the state-run NHK television network reported today.

TEPCO plans to boost it in early December and is also considering other possible measures, according to the network.

This ice wall, an extremely expensive and time-consuming project, was built to prevent groundwater contamination. It was part of efforts to reduce radioactive contamination after the 9-magnitude earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, which destroyed the plant and caused the reactors to melt.

TEPCO has not yet confirmed the NHK information.
