The Japanese government wants Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) and Sony Group to invest $ 9.2 billion to build the country’s first 20-nanometer chip factory. This was announced by a source with reference to the Japanese edition of Nikkan Kogyo.
The publication says the facility will be built next to Sony’s image sensor plant in southwestern Japan. This proposal was made by the Japanese Ministry of Trade and Industry.
Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida declined to comment on the post, but said “a stable chip supply is essential to maintain Japan’s international competitiveness.”
TSMC also declined to comment.
A ministry spokesman limited himself to stating that the message was untrue.
Severe trade tensions between the United States and China have raised concerns that too much of the world’s chip production is in Taiwan. This contributes to a global chip shortage that has hit automakers particularly hard.
Japan, like the United States, is looking for ways to increase local semiconductor production by supplying critical components to its companies.
The most advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility in Japan is now the Renesas Electronics plant near Tokyo, where 40 nm standards have been adopted.
