The Japanese government has announced that it will gradually reduce and eventually cut off coal imports from Russia, while imposing further sanctions on Moscow in retaliation for the war in Ukraine, in coordination with its allies in the West.
Japanese Industry Minister Koichi Hagiuda explained to the press that Tokyo will gradually reduce Russian coal imports and intends to stop them altogether in the future.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also announced that further sanctions would be imposed, citing – for the first time – “war crimes” in Ukraine by the Russian armed forces, assuring that his government is in consultation with the other G7 countries.
Russia accounted for 11% of Japan’s total carbon imports in 2021, according to government data. Russia was Japan’s fifth-largest supplier of crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) the same year.
