Japan will test technology that charges gadgets over the air via 5G

Japanese mobile operator SoftBank intends to soon test a technology that charges headphones, smartwatches and other wearable devices over the air. According to Nikkei, dedicated wireless power transmission devices will be installed in 5G base stations deployed by SoftBank. The tests will begin as soon as the government relaxes restrictions on the use of such wireless technologies.

SoftBank is currently replacing its 4G base stations with 5G throughout Japan. Wearable wireless charging technology was developed in partnership with Kyoto University, Kanazawa Institute of Technology and the National Institute of Information and Communication Technology. Its essence lies in the fact that the electric charge is transmitted in the high frequency range of 28 GHz, which is used in 5G cellular communications. Accordingly, anyone can automatically charge compatible devices by simply walking up to the base station.

To prevent negative effects on the human body, the operator will transmit about 1 mW of energy at a distance of up to 10 meters. In the future, the radius will be increased to 100 meters. In addition to charging wearable devices over the air, the technology can also be applied to search beacons and various medical implant sensors.

Today in Japan there is a restriction on the use of this technology, as wireless transmission of energy can interfere with communications. However, already this year, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications intends to issue a decree on the allocation of several frequency bands for wireless charging. Initially, the technology will be allowed to be used indoors, and in 2024 – on the streets. The technology is expected to be commercialized in 2025.
