Japanese LDP loses its three seats in Sunday's parliamentary by-elections

Kyo news agency reported late Sunday that the Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), led by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, had lost three key seats in House of Representatives by-elections. held early in the morning.

The LDP decided not to run in the Nagasaki and Tokyo by-elections. However, he lost Shimane, a prefecture where the LDP has been in for a long time.

The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, leader of the opposition and led by leftist Lower House legislator Kenta Izumi since November 2021, won the three seats thanks to the support of anti-LDP voters.

LDP General Secretary Toshimitsu Motegi, No. 2 after Kishida, told reporters in Tokyo: “We will humbly accept the results” of Sunday's byelection, adding that the party “needs to work as one to deal with the challenge.”

Kishida's term as party president expires in September and defeat is unlikely to go in his favor this year.
