Jararaca is rescued in the backyard of home in Santa Catarina

A jararaca was found in a wooden heap in the backyard of a house in Jaraguá do Sul, in northern Santa Catarina. The snake was rescued by biologist Gilberto Duwe, who published the case on his social networks.

The rescued animal is an adult female about 1.20 meters long. For the rescue, the biologist used specific techniques to prevent the animal’s escape and the correct handling not to harm the snake.

The expert warns of the conditions where the snake was found. “The courtyard of the house had plenty of accumulated material, this ends up attracting Jararaca,” explains the biologist.

According to the biologist, spaces with many huddled materials may have rodents, which serve as food for various species of snake. “She looked like she had just eaten,” he explained.

Jararaca is a kind of poisonous snake with a lethality rate of about 90%, according to the biologist. In case of bite by snakes of this species, the anti -phase serum should be applied immediately.

According to the biologist Jararaca is a very common species in urban areas, the unusual is the size of the animal rescued, which is about 1.20 meters long. “Usually the jararaci we capture are much smaller than 1 meter,” explains Gilberto. “This jararaca really impressed by its size,” he concluded.

The biologist also highlights the ecological importance of Jararaca for the balance of the natural ecosystem. “A snake of this species can cause two million rodents to cease to exist, in a linear calculation, considering the reproductive rate of these rodents over the 20 years of Jararaca’s life,” explained Gilberto.
