THE head of Poland’s ruling populist, nationalist party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski will rejoin the government as deputy prime minister, a cabinet spokesman said, as Poland prepares for parliamentary elections this fall.
Kaczynski, 74, has been considered Poland’s de facto leader since the first victory of the Law and Justice Party (PiS) in the 2015 parliamentary elections. “The leader of our political camp, PiS president Jaroslaw Kaczynski will become the sole deputy prime minister,” the government spokesman told the PAP news agency, according to the Athens Agency.
At the same time, four deputy prime ministers resigned from their positions and will remain ministers. Polish President Andrzej Duda will formally appoint Kaczynski later in the day.
According to political observers, the return of Kaczynski, who will oversee all government work, will play a stabilizing role amid tensions in the government structure and prepare the faction for elections likely to be held in October.
Although PiS remains in the lead in the opinion polls, the main opposition party – Citizens’ Platform (PO) – is gaining ground.
According to a poll by the CBOS institute, Kaczynski’s party can count on the support of 33% of respondentswhile PO is credited with 27% of voting intent (having raised his percentage by 4 percentage points compared to the previous poll).
The far-right party Konferderacja secures 8%. The left, as well as the coalition of the peasant party PSL and the liberal party Polska 2050, receive, according to the poll, 5% of the vote each.
