“Rome, August 15th, a deserted city. Two men at the wheel of a convertible Lancia Aurelia B24 embark on a journey that will become legend. It is the beginning of Overtaking, film shot by Dino Risi in 1962, a film that became not only a cult but a symbol of a decade, the Sixties, which represents the adolescence of an Italy that dreamed of becoming great and that in fact would have clashed with all the mirages, the defeats, dreams, goals and struggles of maturity in the following decades ». So had the director Simone Marchetti written to present the issue of Vanity Fair released in July 2020, which recalled that great scene, that unforgettable image: Vittorio Gassman and Jean-Louis Trintignant as they whiz fast on the path of their destiny.
Today Jean-Louis Trintignant leaves us at 91, born in Piolenc, a small town in Provence, on 11 December 1930, a symbol of French cinema and theater, the protagonist of a career spanning more than seventy years. To announce his disappearance was his wife, Mariane Hoepfner Trintignant. In the excommunicated to the France Presse agency, we read that Trintignant “died peacefully, of old age, this morning, in his house, in Gard (in the south of Francia), surrounded by his relatives “.
He has played over 120 roles, with Bertolucci, Scola, Chabrol, Truffaut, Kieslowski, up to Michael Haneke, who in 2012 won him the Palme d’Or to Cannes for Best Actor. Sexy, thoughtful, capable of profound roles, did not always have an easy life: after the death of her daughter, Marie, in 2003, killed by her partner Bertrand Cantat, the singer of Noir Désir, said: “I died with her.”
He officially retired from the stage in 2018, announcing that he had to fight a tumor: «In the first days I decided to fight», he said, «but then I got a bit lazy, I get looked after and I wait. I no longer feel safe, and above all I feel old and useless ». One exception in 2019 for old friend Claude Lelouch for the sequel to A man and a womanagain alongside Anouk Aimée.
