If you have read Antonia Fraser’s wonderful biography of Marie Antoinette – but also if you have watched Lady Oscar – the character of Jeanne du Barry it certainly shouldn’t be new. It is a woman of humble origins who manages, thanks to her charm and cunning, to make her way to the court of Versailles, quickly becoming Louis XV’s favorite courtesan, ready to extract favors from the sovereign and to fight the hostility and the gossips of the aristocrats anxious to destroy it. After appearing in dozens of films and TV series as a supporting character, she is the director and actress herself Maiwenn to restore dignity to her person, choosing to dedicate a film that bears her name to her. Her name is Jeanne du Barry – The King’s Favoriteopened out of competition on 76th Cannes Film Festivaland is finally ready to land in theaters on August 30, distributed by Notorius Pictures.
The film, more than for the character itself, is striking for the return with great pomp of an actor who in recent years has encountered violent private and work turmoil: let’s talk about Johnny Depp, called by Maïwenn to play the role of Louis XV following the end of the controversial trial of ex-wife Amber Heard and its purge from several Hollywood productions, including the saga of Fantastic Beasts. What is central to the film is above all the story of love and passion that recounts the life, rise and fall of Jeanne – played by Maïwenn herself – as well as the impressive historical reconstruction that was able to count on the collaboration of a maison as Chanel for making the costumes.
The social ascent of Jeanne Vaubernier, who went from being a humble working-class woman to a countess hungry for life and privileges, is seasoned by the story of a love that surpasses all decorum and labels of which we show you the dawn in the clip that you find above and that Vanity Fair offers you a preview. This is the very first meeting between Jeanne Du Barry and the sovereign, in front of the bewildered and indignant gaze of those present due to the effrontery shown by the young woman in looking Louis XV in the face at the moment of bowing. To complete the cast, the stars Benjamin Lavernhe (The French Dispatch), Melvil Poupaud (Brother and sister), Peter Richard (I present yours), Pascal Gregory (The last hour) And India Hair (La Ligne – The invisible line).
