The actor Jeremy Strong spoke about the criticism he received after playing a gay character in the film “The Apprentice” as a heterosexual man. Strong played Roy Cohn, a gay lawyer and ally of Donald Trump.
“It is absolutely valid [criticar a escolha de atores heterossexuais para papéis LGBTQIA+]”, replied the actor, best known for “Succession”, when asked about it in an interview with the LA Times.
But he added: “I’m a little old-fashioned, perhaps, in the belief that, fundamentally, it’s about a person’s art, and that great artists, historically, have been able to, so to speak, change its nature. That’s your job as an actor. The task, in a way, is to show something that is not necessarily its native habitat.”
“Although I don’t think it’s necessary [que papéis LGBTQIA+ sejam interpretados por artistas LGBTQIA+]I think it would be good if this had more weight”, he added.
“What I feel, no matter who plays any role, is that you have to take these things as seriously as you take your own life, and it’s not a game, and that these people and their struggles and the experiences that you’re trying broadcast are not a toy,” Strong added.
