Jerusalem man shot dead after shooting Israeli officers

An assailant killed and a police officer injured. This is the toll of the attack that took place on Monday evening (December 21) in Jerusalem: a man who opened fire on Israeli police officers in the Old City was shot and killed by the security forces, said the police who did not reveal his identity. “The suspect arrived at the Houta gate (near the site of the Al-Aqsa mosque) and fired at a police position with an assault rifle”, according to a statement from the security forces.

“Officers pursued the terrorist and shot him,” the same source added, a spokesperson telling Agence France-Presse that the man had been killed. Authorities said a police officer was slightly injured when he fell while chasing the suspect. The attack took place in the heart of the Old City of Jerusalem, located in the Palestinian sector of the holy city, occupied and annexed by Israel since 1967, and the scene of clashes.

Police officer injured on August 17

Israel, Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank have been the scene from October 2015 and for months of anti-Israel attacks, most often carried out with knives by isolated young Palestinians, sometimes also with rams and to a lesser extent. , to the gun. The violence has since diminished in intensity, but persists sporadically. On August 17, a Palestinian injured a policeman by stabbing him in the chest before being shot dead by Israeli security forces.

And in May, Palestinian Iyad Hallak, an autistic in his thirties, was shot dead by Israeli police who mistakenly believed him to be armed, sparking anger and outrage. Hundreds of Israelis marched near the police headquarters in Jerusalem and Palestinians led a long procession to protest the death of this Palestinian, denounced by the entire local political class.

The death of Iyad Hallak, at the entrance to the Old City of Jerusalem, had then collided with that, in the United States, of George Floyd. On Arab social networks, the hashtag #PalestinianLivesMatter (“The lives of Palestinians matter”) then rubbed shoulders with #BlackLivesMatter, an anti-racist movement and rallying cry in the United States.
