The images arrived on September 13th, the start date of the Thimpu Tsechu Festival, one of the most important celebrations held in the country known as “the happiest in the world” and which will continue for three days. A religious festival established at the end of the seventeenth century, which every year in mid-September brings together many people in the capital.

What better occasion to show the subjects how much the little princess has grown? Officially presented to the world three months after her birth, the little girl has two highly symbolic names that mean respectively “longevity and fortune” and “prosperity and well-being”. She is the third daughter of the royals of Bhutan: in the family there are also the Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel7 years old, and the Prince Jigme Ugyen3. Only they, as males, will be able to ascend to the throne one day, and if others were to be born in the future, little Sonam, now third in line of succession, would be ousted from her place by any brothers. Salic law is still ironclad in the small Asian state, but who knows, perhaps the openness of the young sovereigns will lead to new choices. Jigme Khesar, after all, he has already done many things. The king has chosen, for example, to to renounce the tradition of polygamy when he married Jetsun Pema, and opened the doors of the Royal Palace to the world by often posting excerpts of the family’s life on social media.

Just a few weeks ago, on the occasion of the inauguration of a public park, the king and queen had published a series of images together with all three of their children, while during the summer an official trip to Mongolia had shown them for the first time in the world in Western clothes. Small steps, towards the future.
