Jewish student is victim of anti-Semitism by other classmates at elite school in SP

A Jewish student was the victim of anti-Semitic acts committed by other classmates at an elite school in São Paulo. The 15-year-old teenager is a student at Beacon School, one of the most prestigious bilingual schools in the state, and recently joined the private unit.

A group of students reportedly drew symbols and wrote Nazi and anti-Semitic chants in notebooks to signal the presence of the Jewish student in the class. The boy, victim of psychological aggression, would then have informed his parents who demanded that the appropriate measures be taken by the school.

Wanted by CNN, Beacon School reported that, after learning of the episode, it immediately adopted a series of measures. The students responsible for the attacks were removed from the unit, as an initial action taken in response to the act.

The school unit also reiterated that it vehemently repudiates any manifestation of hatred and states that it provided full support to the affected family. For now, the case continues to be investigated by the school.

Israeli Federation follows the case

The Israeli Federation of the State of São Paulo (Fisesp) spoke out about what happened. After learning of the accusations of anti-Semitism made against the student, Fisesp contacted both the parents of the student who suffered the acts, as well as the school management who, according to them, were readily available to collaborate.

Together with the school, the federation stated that it will carry out socio-educational actions for the community of students and parents in order to curb and minimize possible future anti-Semitic attacks such as those suffered by the student.

Also according to the federation, anti-Semitic attitudes will not be tolerated in schools, as well as in society as a whole.

“We are and will always be vigilant in defending our Jewish community and acting for the well-being of everyone”, guaranteed Fisesp.

Beacon School, opened in 2010, currently has around 1,300 students, from Kindergarten to High School. Tuition fees on campus, to access full-time education, can exceed R$7,000.00.

In 2023, the unit created the Beacon Institute with the purpose of promoting affirmative practices in favor of a diverse and inclusive community within the school.
