the first lady of U.S , Jill Biden took an unannounced trip this Sunday (8) to Uzhhorod, Ukraine, a small town in the extreme southwest of the country.
At a renovated school that now serves as temporary housing for displaced citizens, Biden met with the First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska, who had not been seen in public since the beginning of war on the 24th of February.
The First Lady is the most recent high-ranking American official and the first member of the family of the President of the United States, Joe Biden visiting the war-torn country in recent weeks.
“I wanted to come for Mother’s Day,” Biden told his Ukrainian counterpart, as the two women sat at a small table in a classroom at an old school that houses 48 children.
“We thought it was important to show the Ukrainian people that this war has to stop. And this war has been brutal.” Biden added that “the people of the United States stand with the people of Ukraine.”
Zelenska, who at the beginning of the Russian invasion sent a letter to Biden, has exchanged correspondence with the first lady in recent weeks, US officials told CNN .
