US First Lady Jill Biden paid a surprise visit to Ukraine today, her spokeswoman said, and met with Ukrainian counterpart Olena Zelenska at a school near the border with Slovakia.
“I wanted to come for Mother’s Day. I thought it was important to show the Ukrainian people that this war must stop,” he told reporters, adding that “the American people are on the side of the Ukrainian people.”
Jill Biden was in Slovakia this week, among others, to meet with families of Ukrainian refugees.
The visit to Slovakia
US First Lady Jill Biden met today with Ukrainian refugees in eastern Slovakia, on the last day of her tour of Romania and Slovakia, to visit US troops deployed in those countries and women and children who have left Ukraine for to escape the Russian invasion.
Biden spoke with refugee families, volunteers and staff at a refugee reception center in the town of Kosice in eastern Slovakia, one of the main crossing points for more than 400,000 Ukrainian refugees who crossed the border into Slovakia after the Russian invasion. February 24th.
“When the war started, we realized there was no security anywhere in Ukraine,” Victoria Kutocha, a teacher who fled Uzhhorod, western Ukraine, told Jill Biden with her 7-year-old daughter.
The wife of US President Joe Biden asked how she explains the war to children.
“It’s very difficult to explain. All I said was that there was a war and I could not explain it because I did not even know myself,” she said.
“It’s absurd,” Biden told her before embracing her mother and child.
Jill Biden also visited a school for young refugees.
“The hearts of the American people are with the mothers of Ukraine,” she said, wishing school women a beautiful Mother’s Day.
A woman there said she felt the children needed someone to explain the war to them.
“They need to understand why we are here and why we are receiving help, why we are separated from our spouses. They need to understand what is happening,” he said.
Later today, Jill Biden is expected to visit Vishne Nemetske, the main border crossing at the 98km border between Slovakia and Ukraine.
