From the walls of his hospice room, former President Jimmy Carter keeps a close eye on changes in the Democratic Party.
His grandson, Jason Carter, said the former president was “super aware” of the changes that have occurred in the 2024 Democratic campaign since Vice President Kamala Harris became the presidential nominee.
Recently, the family was discussing the former president’s upcoming 100th birthday when he said, “Yeah, I’m excited about that, but I’m really excited to vote for Kamala Harris,” he said, as quoted by Jason Carter.
The younger Carter said his grandfather is “remarkably engaged” and “is excited about the prospects we have of turning the page on this era that we live in, with Donald Trump as a kind of constant presence in our politics.”
Carter — a longtime friend of Joe Biden — was also keeping an eye on the president’s decision to drop out of the race.
Biden was the first senator to endorse Carter’s run in 1976, and his grandson described him as “proud that Joe Biden made the courageous decision to pass the baton.”
Carter has remained in a palliative care unit for the past 18 months. His grandson said Wednesday (21) that “Carter’s body is very weakened physically, but he is doing well.”
Biden said last year that Carter asked him to deliver his eulogy after his death.
