The former US president Jimmy Carter has decided “to spend his remaining time at home with his family” and will receive only palliative care, rather than additional medical treatments, the Carter Center announced tonight.
“He has the full support of his family and medical team. The Carter family asks that their privacy be respected during this time and is grateful for the concern expressed by his many fans,” the 98-year-old former president’s foundation said.
Carter is the oldest living former president of the USA. In recent years he has faced many health problems, including a melanoma that metastasized to his liver and brain. “After successive, short hospitalizations, the former president decided today to spend his remaining time with his family,” the foundation said, according to international agencies and the Athens News Agency.
