Jiu-jitsu master who proposed “task force” in Copacabana gives testimony

Physical education teacher and jiu-jitsu master Fernando Pinduka gave a statement this Friday (8), at the 12th DP, in Copacabana, in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. He went to provide clarifications after making a publication calling on residents of the neighborhood to take to the streets to, supposedly, combat crime in the neighborhood.

“We cannot be vulnerable. I was called to clarify my indignation that was posted on social media and the words were distorted by opportunists. They’re saying I was trying to hit people, it’s not like that at all. I am an educator, master, I am for peace. The police have to take charge, take control of this action to protect the neighborhood. You can’t take justice into your own hands, you have to hand it over to the public authorities,” said Pinduka as he left the police station.

In a publication made at the beginning of the week, Pinduka had said that “it would be fantastic for local gyms and fighters to participate in this idea, embracing the cleaning project in Copacabana”.

“Residents and passers-by walk unprotected on the streets. I intend to organize a possible task force to neutralize these miscreants in defense of the tranquility of the neighborhood”, he added.

In addition to him, William Correia, who is being called the “Sheriff of Copacabana”, gave testimony this afternoon. He published a video on social media calling on the population to combat violence on the streets of Copacabana.

“So, Copacabana boys, what will it be? Are we going to let the guys do what they want here in our neighborhood? Where are our guys from 2015 who sent these guys running? And there? Are you going to hope to be our father, our grandfather, your father, someone from your family? Take a punch in the face and leave it at that, no one does anything?”, she stated in part.

After images circulated that captured possible actions by the “South Zone Punishers”, William issued a note saying that he has no relationship with the group.

Residents of Copacabana gather in front of the police station where the testimonies take place and stage a protest against the violence.
