Biography

Son of businessman Orlando Heitor Soares and Mercedes Leal Soares, José Eugênio Soares was born on January 16, 1938 in Rio de Janeiro. At the age of 12, he moved with his family to Europe, where he considered pursuing a diplomatic career, but his love for art spoke louder.

With an extensive career, he was a comedian, television presenter, writer, director and actor. His first role was in “O Homem do Sputnik”, Carlos’ 1958 manga.

Three years later, he started working at TV Record, where he acted in programs such as “La Reuve Chic”, “Jô Show” and “A Família Trapo”, in addition to writing the “Simonetti Show”.

In 1970, he went to TV Globo to star in “Faça Humor, Não Fazer a Guerra”, a program replaced by Satircom in 1973. Three years later, as an actor and writer, he participated in “Planeta dos Homens” until 1981, when he began to dedicate to the program itself, “Viva o Gordo”.

In this, he lived several outstanding characters, such as Reizinho, Capitão Gay and Zé da Galera. Jô left Globo for SBT in 1987 to fulfill one of his greatest desires: to present a talk show.

“Jô Soares Onze e Meia” aired between 1988 and 1999, with more than six thousand interviews with great Brazilian and international personalities. In 2000, the comedian returned to Globo for the iconic “Programa do Jô”, which ended in 2016.
