João Carlos Martins: Festa Junina makes regional music gain strength

O CNN Specialist in culture, João Carlos Martins, explained this Tuesday (21) the origin of the Festas Juninas, which began to be celebrated before the Middle Ages, as pagan festivals to mark the transition from spring to summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

Later, the festival was incorporated by Christianity. “When it came to Brazil, along with the Portuguese colonization, Festa Junina already arrived as a Catholic festival, for São João, São Pedro and Santo Antônio”, said Martins.

The maestro revealed that his name was chosen in honor of the saint: “The forecast of my birth was in the last week of June. I was born on the 25th, a few hours late, but the name João still stuck”.

Martins highlighted the cultural importance of the celebration. “The Festa Junina also makes the roots of Brazilian regional music stronger,” he explained.
