THE Modern Art Week is one of the greatest landmarks in the history of Brazilian culture. That’s how the CNN Specialist in culture, the conductor and pianist João Carlos Martinsdescribes the event that took place 100 years ago, at Theatro Municipal de São Paulo, and that marked all the arts forever in Brazil.
In this conversation with CNN, with the right to a private pocket show by Martins, he analyzes the Semana de 22 from three aspects: its importance, its controversy, in addition to the legend that was forming. For him, the great sum that the event brought was the manifestation of the public, who participated, positively or negatively, in the music or poetry concerts, in the lectures and in the conferences, all headed by great names such as Oswald de Andrade.
Martins also recalls the importance of Heitor Villa-Lobos, who was not one of the creators of the event, but who participated and contributed with his music, by including his DNA in Brazilian folklore songs.
“All these contributions were important for the cultural growth of our country. And I hope that we continue a walk towards infinity. We need to celebrate Modern Art Week, because it means freedom of expression.”
