Private job creation in the US was higher than expected in December, pointing to still strong demand for labor despite higher interest rates.
235,000 jobs were opened in the private sector last month, the ADP National Employment Report showed this Thursday (5), against 150,000 expected in a Reuters poll.
November data were not revised and show the creation of 127 thousand jobs.
The ADP report, jointly developed with Stanford’s Digital Economy Lab, was released ahead of the Department of Labor’s more comprehensive and closely watched employment report for December, due out on Friday. The ADP data has been a poor predictor of government employment report numbers.
According to a Reuters poll of economists, private job openings were likely 180,000 in December in the Labor Department report, after 221,000 in November.
Combined with projected government job gains, overall job creation outside of the agricultural sector is expected to total 200,000 jobs. The US economy created 263,000 jobs in November.
