US President Joe Biden arrived in South Korea today, the first stop on his first trip to Asia as president.
Biden was received at US Air Force Base by South Korean Foreign Minister Park Geun-hye and US Army Chief of Staff Paul Lacamera, among other US and South Korean officials.
Biden is expected to meet with South Korean President Yoon Sook-geol later today at a Samsung Electronics plant, ahead of a full day of meetings tomorrow, Saturday.
It will be the first meeting of the two leaders. Yoon took office on May 10 and has pledged to deepen ties with Washington.
The South Korean president hopes to secure assurances from Biden that the United States will step up its deterrence against the North Korean threat, while expanding its two-decade-old alliance to address other issues.
Biden is also expected to raise the issue of addressing China’s presence in the region.
