Joe Biden expresses solidarity with flood victims in Rio Grande do Sul

In an official statement from the White House, American President Joe Biden expressed solidarity with the victims of the floods in Rio Grande do Sul.

“Jill and I are deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation caused by the floods in Brazil. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this tragedy and with the first responders working to rescue and provide medical care to families and individuals,” the statement reads.

Also according to the statement, Biden states that his administration is in contact with Brazilian partners and that “the United States is working to provide necessary assistance to the Brazilian people, in coordination with Brazilian authorities, while leading the response”. And he adds: “The United States stands by Brazil at this difficult time.”

International aid

Itamaraty stated that at least seven countries have already expressed their willingness to help Brazil in supporting the population affected by the tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul. Most of them are from South America, but there was also contact from the Middle East and North America.

In recent days, according to the Brazilian government, Argentina, Chile, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela have expressed solidarity and offered donations and help. The Vatican also reported that Pope Francis allocated 100,000 euros to the victims.

The World Bank also said that it made US$125 million available, equivalent to more than R$600 million in emergency resources for Rio Grande Sul.

According to the statement published by the institution, the resources were reallocated to projects already underway, such as the “Urban Resilience Program in the South of Brazil”, “Revitalization Program of the Central Area of ​​Porto Alegre”, and “Support Program for the New Bolsa Family”.
