Joe Biden has arrived for his first tour of the Middle East

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has arrived in Israel for his first tour as a president in the Middle East, Agence France-Presse reports.

The presidential plane Air Force One landed a while ago at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, where it is waiting to be greeted by President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Yair Lapid.

No change in US consular policy for Palestinians in Jerusalem

White House spokesman John Kirby said the White House National Security Adviser was wrong today when he told reporters that the United States wanted a Palestinian consulate in East Jerusalem.

Kirby said there is no change in US policy regarding the consulate.

The United States wants to reopen its consulate for Palestinians in Jerusalem, located west of the city, which former US President Donald Trump closed in 2019.

Earlier, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the White House would like to see a US consulate open for Palestinians in East Jerusalem as President Joe Biden begins his trip to the region today.

“Our position is that we would like a consulate in East Jerusalem. Obviously that requires engagement with the Israeli government. It also requires engagement with the Palestinian leadership. And we will continue that engagement with this trip,” Sullivan told reporters on the Air Force 1 aircraft.

Sullivan also said US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had spoken with the family of Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh. “He invited the family to the US so he could sit down and talk to them directly,” Sullivan said.
